Sam Goodchild
Crew
Date of birth: 19 November 1989
Place of birth: Bristol, England
His natural reserve conceals an uncommon determination to fulfil his destiny... without rushing things. The leitmotiv of this skipper, who has long made his home in France, is to learn and progress. It's a method he's tried and tested ever since he started ocean racing over 15 years ago.
After graduating from the Artemis Offshore Academy at the age of 20 - the school which has trained some of the most talented British sailors today - Sam patiently put together a jigsaw of maritime experiences in all directions: in Figaro, Class 40, Ultim, Ocean Fifty, IMOCA, solo, crewed, in regattas, offshore, in record races, and on all the seas of the world.
In 2023, he will discover The Ocean Race in the IMOCA Class as part of the Holcim-PRB crew. In 2024, he will make his childhood dream come true by lining up at the start of the Vendée Globe, a race that he will lead from the front for 76 days. The wealth of experience he has accumulated - along with a fine list of achievements - makes him one of the best skippers around.
On the water, Sam is fully in his own world. His early years spent in the West Indies, in Grenada, aboard the family boat, have a lot to do with it. Aboard Biotherm, Paul Meilhat will be able to count on his expertise, versatility and sailing skills. "The course of The Ocean Race Europe is great," confides Sam.
"With this coastal aspect and these short legs, we're going to get back into the Solitaire du Figaro spirit. I'm also looking forward to racing with a crew again: we all know each other on board, we're a great group and we're super motivated to go out and perform. We've got the right tools for the job, and it's up to us to make the most of them."
