Gauthier Lebec
OBR
Date of Birth: 3 November 1993
Place of Birth: Ploemeur, France
Gauthier Lebec’s early years in La Trinité-sur-Mer were shaped by a rhythm of Optimist racing, windsurfing, sport catamarans, and sailing with his family on their boat. “I probably stepped on a boat before I even learned to walk.” If he wasn’t destined to become a professional sailor or elite racer, he would at least be the one to tell their stories - through images.
After completing sports management internships in Australia and Switzerland, he joined BeYou Racing on a work-study programme in 2017, where he trained as an audiovisual technician. For four years, camera in hand, he documented the adventures of Jérémie Beyou and his team. That experience launched him as an on board reporter - an embedded storyteller - later working with other skippers including Maxime Sorel and Benjamin Dutreux during The Ocean Race 2022-23.
“It was my childhood friend Amélie (Grassi), with whom I used to sail and even won a French vice-champion title in SL15.5, who called to offer me the OBR role with Biotherm for The Ocean Race Europe,” Gauthier explains. An athlete himself, Gauthier knows the IMOCA boats inside out - where to position himself without disrupting the crew, how to capture powerful moments. He’s drawn to intense expressions, bold manoeuvres in rough seas, and knows how to blend in discreetly. “I’m there to capture the essence of offshore racing, to seize the moment - through my eyes and through the crew’s.”
And when he launches his drone from the cockpit, it’s to “see these boats fly from the outside - they move like nothing else.”
“I’ll be telling the story of the race from the inside, through different lenses and formats - photography, video, and even writing, because I love to write. It’ll be tough, intense - sometimes you just can’t film because the boats are so extreme - but there’s something so exciting about working on Biotherm, with all those stars on board. With a full crew in action, the manoeuvres in brutal conditions will be full-on - and that makes for amazing footage!”
