Justine Mettraux
Crew member
Given that all four of her siblings are also professional sailors it is both fair and accurate to say that for Swiss sailor Justine Mettraux top level yacht racing really does run in the family.
Mettraux (36) started sailing when she was just a few months old with her parents and sister Elodie-Jane on Switzerland’s iconic Lake Geneva. After establishing herself as a talented lake sailor as a teenager she later switched her focus to offshore sailing, cutting her teeth on events such as the Tour de France à la Voile.
In 2013 she finished second in the highly competitive Mini Transat solo transatlantic race from France to the Caribbean – still the best result by a female sailor in the race’s 22-edition history.
As well as racing on the solo French Figaro circuit for four seasons, Mettraux has taken part in two previous editions of The Ocean Race – the first with the Swedish all-women entry Team SCA in 2014-15 and the second in 2017-18 with the victorious Chinese-flagged Dongfeng Race Team.
In 2021, as part of 11th Hour Racing Team’s preparation for The Ocean Race 2022-23, Mettraux and her British teammate Simon Fisher raced doublehanded aboard the team’s first IMOCA Alaka’i to finish third in the 2021 Rolex Fastnet Race, and second in the Le Defi Azimut 48-hour sprint.
In addition to taking on her third consecutive edition of The Ocean Race, Mettraux is also campaigning for the 2024 Vendée Globe aboard her own IMOCA, TeamWork.net – previously Jérémie Beyou’s highly potent Charal – on which she recently finished an impressive seventh out of 38 in the solo Route du Rhum transatlantic race from St. Malo, France to Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe.
