Australian born yachtsman Jack Bouttell (32) became obsessed with ocean racing as a teenager after moving to the United Kingdom with his family as a teenager. When his parents decided to return to Australia, Bouttell – at just 18 – chose to stay on, determined to pursue his dream of one day competing in the Vendée Globe.
Having served his time working in boat yards and sail lofts on the English south coast his racing potential was spotted by the Artemis Offshore Academy where he honed his solo offshore skills before in 2013 becoming the first British sailor to win the top Bizuth (Rookie) prize in the first of his four Solitaire du Figaro campaigns.
Bouttell got his big break in The Ocean Race during the 2014-15 edition when he was elevated from Dongfeng Race Team’s shore crew to race aboard the Chinese VO65 for the third leg from Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates to the team’s homeport in Sanya.
In 2016 Bouttell raced aboard Spindrift Racing’s victorious maxi trimaran – at 40 metres / 130 feet the world’s largest multihull – in the Québec to Saint-Malo race, before rejoining Dongfeng Race Team to win The Ocean Race 2017-18.
In 2021, racing as watch captain aboard the Portuguese-flagged Mirpuri Foundation Racing Team, Bouttell won the VO65 class in the inaugural edition of The Ocean Race Europe.
