Crew Member
Damien Seguin is renowned in his French homeland for his five 2.4 Metre class world championship victories and three sailing medals at the Paralympic Games – gold in both Athens 2004 and Rio 2016, and silver in Beijing 2008 – as well as for his seventh place finish in the Vendée Globe 2020-21.
Despite being born without a left hand Seguin (43) has never allowed this limitation to be an obstacle to him achieving his goals in the sport of sailing – which he fell in love with in 1990 after watching the finish of the Route du Rhum in Guadeloupe – and is the founder of the charity Association Des Pieds et Des Mains (Feet and Hands) which campaigns for more access to water sports for people with disabilities. Only two months before the start of The Ocean Race 2022-23, while racing in the 2022 edition of the Route du Rhum aboard his own IMOCA Groupe APICIL Seguin collided with a cargo ship. The impact damaged the boat’s port foil and tore down its mast, nevertheless Seguin did not request outside assistance and made his way back to France under motor and with the added propulsion at times of an emergency kite system.
Seguin and Biotherm Racing skipper Paul Meihat have been friends for over 20 years since meeting during their respective Paralympic and Olympic campaigns when they worked with the same coach.
