Crew Member
British yachtswoman Samantha Davies reportedly found her sea legs at a very early age after taking her first steps as a toddler while aboard her parents’ cruising boat.
Few skippers, male or female, can match the scale of Davies’ ocean racing track record which she kicked off in 1998 at the age of 24 with an ill-fated Jules Verne Trophy attempt aboard the maxi catamaran Royal Sun Alliance.
The 92-foot catamaran’s all-women crew was on track to set a new nonstop around-the-world record when the circumnavigation was halted by a broken mast off the coast of Chile.
Davies (48) has successfully raced around the world twice since: in the gruelling 2008-09 edition of the singlehanded Vendée Globe when she finished fourth, and The Ocean Race 2014-15 when she skippered the all-women crew of the Swedish-flagged entry Team SCA.
In the Vendée Globe 2020-21 she was forced to pull out of the race in Cape Town, South Africa with structural damage to her yacht but after repairs she set off again solo and completed the course outside the race. In doing so, she raised enough money to save 102 kids lives with the french charity Mecenat Chirurgie Cardiaque.
Sam is skipper of the IMOCA Initiatives Coeur (since 2017) and continues to race in the circuit to support the french charity Mecenat Chirurgie Cardiaque saving kids who suffer from heart health issues from countries that do not have the resources to treat them.
Aside from her around the world exploits Davies has also raced across the Atlantic more than 25 times in races such as the Mini Transat, Solitaire du Figaro, Transat Ag2r, Transat Jacques Vabre, OSTAR, and the Route du Rhum.
Her return to The Ocean Race with Biotherm Racing for the first time since her Team SCA campaign in 2014-15 marks a reunion with French skipper Paul Meilhat who she first met as an opponent in the Figaro class and went on to be co-skipper with in the 2019 Transat Jacques Vabre.
