Sam Goodchild

Crew Member

United Kingdom

Having lived aboard his family’s boat the first 11 years of his life it is no surprise that British sailor Sam Goodchild has made a name for himself on the international yacht racing scene.

In 2011 he moved to France – the epicentre of professional ocean racing – and has since carved out an enviable reputation for himself within France’s professional sailing community.

After starting out as a shore-side ‘préparateur’ for top IMOCA teams like Alex Thomson’s Hugo Boss, he went on to skipper his own campaigns on the ultra-competitive solo Figaro circuit, before building his open ocean racing experience in the Class 40 and Ocean Fifty classes.

As well as being selected to sail with top French Ultim syndicates like Thomas Coville’s Sodebo and Yann Guichard and Dona Bertarelli’s Spindrift over recent seasons, Goodchild skippered the Ocean Fifty trimaran Leyton to victory in the 2021 Pro Sailing Tour.

After being tipped as a favourite to win the Ocean Fifty class in the 2022 solo Route du Rhum, he was forced out of the race after sustaining injuries on board after an equipment malfunction at the start of the transatlantic crossing.

Now Goodchild returns for his second edition of The Ocean Race after previously being a member of the Spanish MAPFRE team in the 2014-15 race.

Previous participation in The Ocean Race:
2014-15 MAPFRE (as team member)
