Ambrogio Beccaria

Skipper

Italy

Date of birth: 1 October 1991
Place of birth: Milano, Italy

At 33, with a degree in naval engineering, with a degree in naval engineering, Ambrogio Beccaria didn't grow up by the sea, but in Milan, right in the heart of Italy. He started out sailing double-handed and with a crew, but everything changed in 2013 when he used his savings to buy a battered Mini 6.50, a small boat wrecked in the Atlantic. A bold move... which marked the start of his solo adventure.

He quickly made a name for himself: between 2018 and 2019, victory after victory, Ambrogio became the first Italian to win the Mini Transat - the emblematic solo transatlantic race that inspires a whole generation of sailors. This breakthrough propelled him into the limelight and earned him the title of ‘Sailor of the Year’ in Italy two years running.

In 2022, he launched Alla Grande - Pirelli, an all-Italian project with a brand new Class40 designed and built in Italy. In his very first major race with this boat, he finished 2nd in the Route du Rhum, followed by two major victories: the Transat Jacques Vabre and the Transat CIC (single-handed).

Now based in Lorient, Ambrogio speaks fluent French and Italian, and continues to make headway in the IMOCA world. Both at sea and ashore, he brings a contagious energy and a fresh state of mind. With The Ocean Race Europe on the horizon, Ambrogio arrives with ambition, enthusiasm and that inimitable Italian flair.

“This is my first race as skipper with such a large team, both on board and ashore - a true baptism in this role. It’s an important step to see if I’m really up to the task. Sailing with Thomas, whom I’ve always considered a benchmark, was a natural fit, and we share a similar approach to performance. We both know that to go fast, you first and foremost need to be comfortable at sea and good sailors. I’m also delighted to be reunited with Morgan, whom I knew as a competitor in Class40 and Figaro. He’s an instinctive sailor, born on the water: learning alongside him is a plus because everything seems easy with him. As for Manon, we’ve only shared a few outings, but her determination is obvious. Like Morgan, she comes from the Olympic classes and is a great talent at the helm. It’s now a matter of transferring the skills from her world to ours.”
