September 2023 marks the month where we celebrate 50 years of The Ocean Race.
On September 8, 1973, Portsmouth, England, was the site of the start of the very first Whitbread Round the World Race. 17 yachts of varying designs took the start, beginning an adventure that continues to this day.
The Mexican yacht Sayula II, a sleek Swan 65 under the command of skipper Ramón Carlin, emerged victorious after 152 days (133 days on corrected time).
Over the course of the month, we will take look back the heritage and legacy of The Ocean Race, including its top legends, iconic host cities and breakthrough boats.
We start today, with a look at that initial 1973 edtion of the Race.
