The repaired Holcim PRB and Allagrande Mapei boats arrive in Portsmouth ready to race
The two boats arrived from Kiel on Saturday and will be on the starting line for leg two...
Skipper Rosalin Kuiper was emotional dockside as she watched her newly repaired boat arrive at Gunwharf Quays in Portsmonth on Sautrday evening, less than 24 hours before the start of Leg 2.
"It's very special and hard to describe all the emotions," Kuiper said. "I'm super happy and proud. There she is, back with us, and ready to go."
It's been less than a week since a collision shortlly after the start in Kiel resulted in significant damage to both Team Holcim PRB and Allagrande Mapei Racing.
For Holcim PRB, the contact between the boats resulted in damage to the hull - a relatively large hole that needed to be replaced and reinforced to maintain strength and safety and allow the boat to get back in the race.
"The team worked so hard over the past week to get here and now we are ready to get racing tomorrow," she said. "I can't wait to get off the dock and just start racing and show the world what we can do. We have an excellent crew and great boat and we're ready!"
A few hours later it was turn of Allagrande Mapei skipper Ambrosio Beccaria to share his gratitude for all the support he and his team received after the leg one collision knocked both teams out of the leg.
"When we came back to the pontoon in Kiel it was a hard moment. I was scared to see everyone back on the dock and I was not happy about what happened. I was afraid about the reaction," Beccaria said, reflecting on his feelings last week.
"But then I found out that an accident like this can pull a team together. I didn't know it would be possible to feel so strong within a team and to be so supported by our sponsor, by our friends and family but also by a lot of people we don't even know... It's given us a lot of strength."
"Today we are here and we're so happy for the team who did an amazing job and for the adventure that this race will be from kinow until the end."
Racing in leg two is scheduled to start off the Royal Yacht Squadron starting line at 1700 local time on Sunday afteroon.
