Recline in reused sails with 727 Sailbags’ Dacron deckchair / €275

Discover the brand bringing fresh wind – and French designer style – to one of sailing’s oldest traditions.

Converting old products into new ones is becoming more and more common these days. From upcycled outerwear to products made from post-consumer plastics, the swing to sustainability is gaining pace. And while the recent uptick in recycling is a welcome trend, it has a long history in sailing – where turning used sails into new products has been a tradition since before Jacques Cousteau was a boy.

Products that give sails a second life have been becoming more visible of late, and one of the leading reasons is 727 Sailbags. From their workshop in Lorient – France’s hotbed of ocean sailing – the makers have elevated upcycled sails from cottage curio to designer chic with products spanning everything from bags and wallets through to table décor, furniture and lighting.

With their bold colour-blocking and patched numbers, these fine folding deckchairs bring regatta ambience to living spaces, patios and pool-sides. Each is made from a span of well-travelled Dacron sailcloth, finished and detailed with the maker’s signature zigzag stitch – a technique that creates hard-wearing seams and distributes loads across the fabric.

As you’d expect from a material with more than a few miles to its name, the solution is weatherproof, but not made for extremes. The chair’s handmade folding frame is made of treated FSC-certified beechwood and can be set to three reclining positions. Slings can be removed for easy cleaning, or even ordered separately to give new life to a frame of your own.
