Two leaders in electric mobility join forces on one of the market’s most innovative mopeds.
It may be an old cliché, but when it comes to urban travel, the times really are a-changin’. As momentum towards low-emission, car-free cities grows in Europe and elsewhere, demand for new mobility solutions has triggered a surge of new-generation companies to provide them.
Among the new crop of names, few have had a steeper rise than Cake. Only 5 years since wowing trailbike fans with its debut electric off-roader, the Swedish start-up’s formula for light, quiet, clean, excitement on two wheels has seen its line-up – and reach – grow at an impressive rate.
Cake’s newest, most affordable ride is the Makka: a compact moped built for city commutes and weekend fun. Weighing only 70kg, the tough little all-rounder earned plenty of smiles on its release – not least from Cake’s compatriots at Polestar. With both companies staking their futures on a zero-emission society, the idea to join forces on the Makka Polestar Edition is a smart one.
This second collaboration between the EV innovators sees the Makka’s aluminium frame sporting sky blue: a nod to the performance carmaker’s ‘O2’ electric roadster concept. Functional upgrades include custom-tuned, Öhlins TTX22 rear suspension, a versatile carrier bracket and streamlined headlights. Cake’s Connect app is also included, giving owners myriad ways to manage their Makka, including theft protection, riding stats and online service support.
Based on Cake’s spritely Makka flex powertrain, this limited edition offers two ride modes: one for speed and another for extended range. Powered by a removable, 1.5kW lithium battery, its direct-drive hub motor promises a top speed of 45 km/h and maximum range of 54 km. Cake’s first Polestar edition sold out quickly, so if you see yourself zipping around town on one of these, you’ll need to be fast.
